Located in Central MA - Charlton, MA - near Sturbridge, Worcester, Auburn, Spencer, Webster and Dudley - on a beautiful old farm with 245 acres of land to enjoy - made up of 100 acres of hay fields, 50 acres of pastures and the rest as woodlands with lovely trails. The property abuts Fay Mountain Farm and the mid state trail for additional riding - you could be gone for days.
The horses are managed and cared for by the owners, Kevin and Marianne McCarthy, who have many years of experience riding and caring for horses and who firmly believe that horses should be cared for in as natural a manner as possible while still providing essential shelter. Although the barn has 14 horse stalls, Kevin and Marianne have chosen to only board a few horses in addition to their own in order to provide exceptional care for each horse - and excellent turnout.
During the winter months - when the snow becomes too much or there are snowstorms, rain, heavy winds, or arctic temperatures the horses are all brought into the big barn and into individual stalls with rubber mats, heated water buckets, mineral and salt blocks, and lots of fresh dry shavings. While in the barn the horses are turned out (weather permitting) during the day for a few hours and brought back in to their stalls in the late afternoon. The stalls are cleaned and re-bedded while the horses are out. The horses are blanketed if desired with the blankets being taken on and off as needed with temperature changes.
The rest of the time the horses are turned out in very large grass paddocks ranging from 1 acre to 15 acres each with run-in sheds, large water tanks (heated in cooler weather), mineral/salt blocks and bug spray and fly masks applied as needed. The horses are either by themselves or with other horses depending on the horse and the owner. The horses have unlimited grazing and are moved to new paddocks when the grass starts to get short - prior to it being grazed too low and unable to recover, preventing dirt turnouts.
All the horses benefit from the fantastic hay the McCarthy's are known for producing. All the hay is made by them from their fertilized hay fields and stored in their barn. The soil is tested each spring and fertilized according to what it needs, with selenium being added yearly to offset the deficiency that the Northeast is known for. Each horse is fed unlimited hay during the non-grazing months to emulate grazing as much as possible and to prevent colic and reduce boredom.
In Short This Is Horse Heaven ! For the owners we offer a heated bathroom with hot water, a nice sand riding ring, tons of trails, a large locked tack room with 16 saddle racks, and the feeling that you have your own private barn to unwind in.
